There are 194 Countries in the World in 2020 list
In this entry I leave you a list with all the sovereign states of the world in alphabetical order ( point 2 ) and a clarification section —which I have been collecting from your questions in recent years— in which I explain to you why some territories are not included in the list ( point 3).

3. CLARIFICATIONS
- The United Nations Organization is made up of 193 member states (you can check them HERE ), to which must be added the Vatican City , which, although acting as an observer member of the organization, is still a fully recognized and independent country. (193 + 1 = 194 ).
- The State of Palestine , being also an observer member, cannot be included as a sovereign country because its recognition is limited and it is not a completely independent country (part of it is under Israeli occupation).
- The Western Sahara is a territory colonized most of its length by Morocco and its sovereignty is disputed between the Moroccan people and the self – proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
- Taiwan and Hong Kong are not independent or internationally recognized territories (claimed by China).
- Kósovo is not a territory recognized by international unanimity (claimed by Serbia).
- Puerto Rico is a territory associated with the United States.
- French Guiana is an overseas territory belonging to France (it is not a country).
- Holland appears in the list with its official name: Netherlands.
- England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland are not official countries, but part of one: the United Kingdom.
- Alaska is one of the 50 states in the USA.
- Greenland is part of Denmark (European country).
- On February 14, 2019 the Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to North Macedonia .

(*) NOTE: Europe and Asia share seven countries that are located between both continents (see: ” Eurasian countries “), therefore the sum of the countries by continents must be subtracted seven: 54 + 35 + 14 + 50 + 48 – 7 = 194 Why? Because if we did not subtract them we would be counting them twice.
