3. CLARIFICATIONS

  • The United Nations Organization is made up of  193 member states (you can check them HERE ), to which must be added the Vatican City , which, although acting as an observer member of the organization, is still a fully recognized and independent country. (193 + 1 = 194 ).
  • The State of Palestine , being also an observer member, cannot be included as a sovereign country because its recognition is limited and it is not a completely independent country (part of it is under Israeli occupation).
  • The Western Sahara  is a territory colonized most of its length by Morocco and its sovereignty is disputed between the Moroccan people and the self – proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
  • Taiwan and Hong Kong are not independent or internationally recognized territories (claimed by China).
  • Kósovo  is not a territory recognized by international unanimity (claimed by Serbia).
  • Puerto Rico is a territory associated with the United States.
  • French Guiana is an overseas territory belonging to France (it is not a country).
  • Holland  appears in the list with its official name:  Netherlands.
  • England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland are not official countries, but part of one: the United Kingdom.
  • Alaska is one of the 50 states in the USA.
  • Greenland is part of Denmark (European country).
  • On February 14, 2019 the Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to North Macedonia .

4. MORE INFORMATION AND REFERENCES

  • How many continents are there? Which are?
  • How many oceans are there? Which are?
  • List of countries by continents:
    • Europe ( 50 countries ) *
    • America ( 35 countries )
    • Asia ( 48 countries ) *
    • Africa ( 54 countries )
    • Oceania ( 14 countries )

(*) NOTE: Europe and Asia share seven countries that are located between both continents (see: ” Eurasian countries “), therefore the sum of the countries by continents must be subtracted seven: 54 + 35 + 14 + 50 + 48 – 7 = 194 Why? Because if we did not subtract them we would be counting them twice.
